Team Bond Photos…

If you have been following my blog recently, you have read about this.  If you read the New York times, you have heard about this.  If you watch the Today Show… well, you catch my drift.   If not…here it is:  Both Elisa and her husband, Nathan, were diagnosed with cancer within 11 days of each other.  She has Stage IV Breast Cancer and he has Stage III Rectal Cancer.  Their daughter Sadie is now about 20 months old.  I have been wanting to share these photos I took of them when I went out to visit in March, but it never seemed like the right time.  I’m going back to see them next week and I know that I’ll take more photos, so now must be the time to share them.  Elisa will be putting them on her blog soon (as soon as she feels good enough to write in her usual witty and hilarious way)… And if you have not been to the “Team Bond” website or facebook page, please check it out.  There are some amazing things going on around the world for them.  Still amazes me each time I get an email about another fundraiser or a stranger posts something on their facebook page in a way of encouragement.

(And yes… I know I said the previous post was my last.  I think I’ll actually do one more tomorrow.  Finally in the “working” mode again after a few weeks off.)

Story on the photos… Elisa wanted a few family shots before she lost her hair.  So I went.   I was there (along with two other close college friends) when her hair started falling out.  It was the morning of the taping for the Today Show (to see footage click HERE).  Even though we knew it would be coming, it was still so incredibly sad…  The next day she had chemo.  When we got back I had about an hour before I had to catch my flight home… her hair was coming out quickly.  It was day 13 of chemo… which is what so many people had told us would happen.  She decided to be proactive… and just like that, the happy, fun music came on and the party was started.  Her mom came over… her cousin, Lara, came over.  She didn’t want any tears.  Sadie was there watching and Elisa & Nathan wanted it to be a positive experience.  Her hair was donated to Locks of Love… and here is the story through my lens.  Love to Nathan, Elisa & Sadie… and see you S-O-O-N!!  XOXO

ENJOY:

  • 1 Stephanie: You give so much...to them and to everyone. I know they must be so thankful that you were there to capture all of these important moments for them. The photos are beautiful and I hope for nothing but a miracle for them. xoxo. (17.05.11, 10:17PM)
  • 2 Amanda: Wow Betsy- this is amazing. You have truly captured such an emotional moment. I couldn't help but cry- obviously because of the circumstances, but what really got me was the beauty that radiated from Elisa in that last shot- the solemness that she displays, the proof that she is at peace with it all. You are such a magnificent photographer. Everyone loves your happy kids shots and always comments on how great you are, but it takes one hell of a photographer to capture and event like this through pictures, and make everyone who watches this slideshow feel like they were there with you guys at the moment it happened. I am in awe of your ability, and of your dedication to your friends, to capturing every aspect of the good and the bad! You are more than talented, I just don't have another word to use right now! Please give my best to Nathan and Elisa and Sadie- the world is still praying! (18.05.11, 05:23AM)
  • 3 Melody Prieto: The above post by Amanda could not have said it any better!! God is using you, Betsy, with your talents,
tender heart and willingness to give of yourself!!
Our prayers continue for Elisa, Nathan & Sadie. (18.05.11, 06:14AM)
  • 4 tammil newton: I am sitting here bawling my eyes out but what a legacy you have created for Sadie. Thank you for posting this and I am thankful for the moment to put things into perspective at the end of a very busy day. Thank you again. Tammi Newton, Raleigh NC (16.06.11, 08:30PM)
  • 5 Patty Magno: I have followed Elisa & Nathan since seeing them on the Today show & they are amazingly strong people & no words are adequate enough regarding their story. Your photos are truly beautiful. I don't know how you also stay strong as a friend to capture those pictures. The music you used in their video is so touching. Could you tell me the name of the second song in that video and who sings it? Thank you for sharing. Friends are priceless & Elisa & Nathan are blessed to have you as one of their friends.
